This is the traditional fishing technique around Xuimuding River, which is quite different from the triangular fishing net technique around Xiuguluan River in Fengbin.

[Indigenous in Translation] The Shells and Shell Ash in the Tradition of Tao/Yami

"No shell ash, no man."

This is a quote from a Tao elder, from which we can learn that shell ash and shells are such sacred and meaningful things for Tao from Orchid Island!

They do not only eat betel nuts with shell ash, but also paint their traditional boats with the shell ash, heal wounds, and even evict evil spirits with it!

Just because shell ash is so special that there are many taboos or rules to follow when making the ash. For example, only in the 9th month in the lunar calendar of Tao can they make shell ash. Also to make shell ash is men's job, not for women -- especially strictly prohibited for those women who take care of taro cultivation!

Why? How come?

Well, because Tao believe their shell ash which can evict evil spirits would instead kill all the taros if it is spread to the taro field by women's hands.

On the other hand, Tao are used to hanging some fishing net and shells beside taro fields, because they believe the Chiragra spider conch can bring the fields water, and other shells like Turbo marmoratus can evict evil spirits from stealing taros away. Actually according to some experts, when shells are hung besides taro fields, weather in the wind and cover the fields, could help keep bugs away!

The Tao cultures of shells and shell ash are so special!

[Subtitle Translation] The Ear Shooting Ceremony in Taki Vatan

1. Malahodaigian, the Ear Shooting Ceremony commenced in the sound of the gun shot.
2. The tribal elders too offered the crops they grew by themselves and worshiped to the ancestral spirits for another peaceful and prosperous year.
3. In order to pass down the culture of Bunun, many elders were teaching the children how to shoot boars' ears with bow and arrow.
4. Many expatriate Bunun of Taki Vatan took the chance to return to Rubas (Wanrong) to attend the annual Ear Shooting Ceremony.

5. Besides the ceremony, many traditional performing art competitions were held to preserve the culture at the same time.
6. The Bunun people of Taki Vatan mainly live in three tribes: Kunuan, Tamayan, and Tungkuang.
7. Even though the Bunun here are surrounded by the Truku people, they don't forget their own culture and will keep holding the Ear Shooting Ceremony to preserve the culture.

[Subtitle Translation] Sans Souci in Taiwan -- The Valley of Tanayiku

Where is it, the Sans Souci, the Place without Sorrow in Taiwan?

Before when the tourists went to the area of Ali Mt., they wouldn't have considered visiting Tanayiku.

At that moment, the Cou people living in the nearby Saviki lived upon agriculture.

Later, the people couldn't stand that the environment of the valley was destroyed day by day. So they decided to work it out by themselves, trying to recover the beauty of the valley of Tanayiku and maintain the ecosystem of the river in the ancestors' way, and eventually established the first private-owned ecological park in Taiwan in Tanayiku!

In the language of Cou, 'Tanayiku' means "A Place without Sorrow". Perhaps this is why the people working here look so happy and contented!

[Subtitle Translation] New Workshop Open to Preserve Traditional Costume Technique of Cou

In order to preserve the traditional costume technique of Cou, the tribe Tfuya in Ali Mt. has set up a new workshop called Good Friend Workshop, trying to make hand-made traditional costumes and to renovate the the traditional costumes with new and modern elements, to make the tradition more vivid and colorful.

一群喜愛台灣原住民文化的青年朋友，特別在網路上成立社團，號召有興趣的民眾來加入，在埔里的噶哈巫青年透過網路和這個社團來聯繫，特別選擇假日來到守城社區舉辦一場噶哈巫文化旅遊，希望藉著民間團體的力量傳承噶哈巫，讓大家認識平埔族

A group of young people (yes, it's us!) who fall in love with the indigenous peoples have set up a fan page on Facebook. After a further collaboration of them and a young Kaxabu man in Puli, together they held their first Kaxabu cultural tour in Puli, trying to improve the people's awareness and knowledge of Kaxabu.

[Subtitle Translation] Ren-ai's Indigenous Dolls for Promoting Local Tourism

Ren-ai Township Office has launched 350 sets of indigenous dolls of the four major indigenous groups in the township, including Seediq, Bunun, Tayal, and Dai.

Ren-ai has a variety of indigenous groups and cultures, and so the township office had spent much time surveying how to design the dolls to make them local, cultural aesthetic, and creative.

Only 350 sets were made for each group as limited by budget, and will only be given as presents in some touristic or cultural events or activities in hopes of showing the beauty of Ren-ai.

[Subtitle Translation] Minanmalao in Kinmen, A Big Party for All the Indigenous Taiwanese

Every winter when the Polstar disappears in the west, it's time for Bunun to hold "minanmalao", the Ceremony of Seeding Millet.

However, in Jinning Township in Kinmen/Jinmen, the first minanmalao held by the Organization of Cultural and Social and Economical Construction of Indigenous Taiwanese seems like a united party for all the indigenous peoples, who left their home in Taiwan Island to work here in Kinmen, to join, including Bunun, Paiwan, and Amis.
